Enhancing food security and agricultural value chains
At SAHDEV, we believe that sustainable agriculture is the foundation of community resilience and food security. Our comprehensive approach integrates traditional knowledge with modern techniques to create farming systems that are productive, profitable, and environmentally sound.
We work with farmers to improve their crop and livestock production through:
We understand that production is just one part of a successful agricultural system. That's why we focus on the entire value chain:
SAHDEV's approach to waste recycling involves converting biodegradable materials into compost for food production and utilizing non-biodegradable materials to manufacture construction materials such as pavement bricks. This method is in line with global efforts to reduce waste and mitigate the impacts of climate change.
These practices contribute to creating new economic opportunities through the development of a circular economy. SAHDEV works in tandem with local councils to implement effective waste recycling practices, ensuring that programs are well-coordinated and meet the needs of the local community. Local councils play a vital role in promoting waste recycling by providing the infrastructure and resources necessary to successfully implement recycling programs.
In 2023, our intervention with 500 smallholder farmers in the North region resulted in a 60% increase in maize yields through improved varieties and training on good agricultural practices. Farmers reported an average income increase of 45%.
We supported a women's cooperative of 75 members to establish irrigated vegetable gardens, providing year-round production and income. The cooperative now supplies fresh vegetables to local markets and restaurants, increasing household nutrition and creating sustainable livelihoods.
